Passive stretches are a scientifically proven method of managing injuries and muscular discomforts. Stretching is an essential aspect of any programme, at all stages of rehabilitation. It is never too soon to intorduce passive stretching. Slow and firm passive stretching will not harm the joint or muscle of the injured site and can be done every day. Tight and/or shortened muscle tissue is stretched by moving the joint as far as possible and maintaining the position for at least ten seconds (your physiotherapist may recomment longer, depending on you needs). Done properly and effectively, passive stretching is not painful but you will experience a sensation of pulling and be aware of gentle but stustained pressure being applied.
Benefits of stretching are:
- Reduced stress levels
- Relieves tension
- Rebalances your body so that you move more easily and with less pain
- Improves energy and blood circulation
- Decreases compression and pinching of joints and nerves
