Strapping is a technique that we use to give a specific area support and to help with postural awareness. Tape is applied to the injured area or body part and this protects and limits it from movements that could be harmful. We use good quality tape that minimises skin reactions and will stay on in your bath or shower.
Tape should be removed if there is excessive itching of the skin underneath or if the strapping is making your pain worse. Also, tape should not be left on for longer than 3 days. You should inform you physiotherapist if you have had previous allergies to tape or elastic dressing or if you have skin conditions.
To remove tape:
- Support the skin around it
- Peel the tape back upon itself
- Do not rip the tape off in an effort to get it over and done with. This could undo the benefits of the strapping by creating force around the injured area.
- If you are sore and/or red after removing the tape, apply ice (wrapped in a wet towel) to the area for 3 to 5 minutes.
