Joint pain can be caused by injury affecting any of the ligaments, bursae, or tendons surrounding the joint. Injury can also affect the ligaments, cartilage, and bones within the joint. Pain is also a feature of joint inflammation (arthritis) and infection, and can be a feature of tumors of the joint. Joint pain is also referred to as arthralgia.
The symptoms of joint pain will vary according to the cause. Symptoms like pain, swelling, stiffness, and/or warmth in your joints suggests joint inflammation due to an injury or an underlying condition like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. These symptoms can also be due to an infection in the joint.
Affected joints may be red, swollen and painful to touch and joint mobility may be restricted. It may be difficult to pinpoint the actual source of pain - the joint itself, the tissues surrounding it or an affected ligament or tendon. When joint pain is severe or ongoing you may need to see a doctor to determine the exact cause and identify the most appropriate treatment. A physiotherapist can often help to treat joint pain effectively through physiotherapy techniques and light exercise prescription. Pilates exercise is also beneficial for reducing joint pain. The slow, controlled movements with resistance is very safe and effective for strengthening joints and surrounding muscles, thus reducing aggravation and pain throughout your day to day living.
Some methods of treatment are:
- Mobilisation and Manipulation therapy
- Acupuncture
- Ultrasound
- Electrotherapy
- Light exercise
